ABOUT THE SHOW

The Mystery Hour began in the original basement theatre of The Skinny Improv as a conspicuously fake TV show. Over five pre-televised seasons, it grew through grassroots word of mouth to become an underground phenomenon.

Now with 3 emmy wins, syndication on multiple FOX networks, and live audiences of 700+ people, The Mystery Hour has completed 6 seasons on television. Hosted by "Mystery" Jeff Houghton, the show  features fascinating guests, incredible music, and hilarious comedy sketches. The Mystery Hour is filmed monthly in front of a live studio audience at the historic Gillioz Theatre in downtown Springfield, MO and airs on FOX 5 Saturday nights at 9:00 p.m. and on FOX 14 Saturday nights at midnight.

THE HOST

Originally from Iowa City, IA. Jeff moved to Springfield, MO in 2003. Shortly thereafter Jeff joined The Skinny Improv Mainstage cast where he performed every weekend to great crowds for several years. It was there that he created The Mystery Hour in 2006.

Jeff has won 3 Emmy Awards. The first came last year for On-Camera Talent - Performer/Host, with 2 more coming this year for Arts and Entertainment Program and Arts and Entertainment Program Featured Segment for Instagram Husband.

Jeff created and starred in the viral hit, Instagram Husband, which currently has over 25 million views as well as many other digital hits. This year he has created videos for 7-Eleven, Fossil, and Thrivent Financial and been the lead in videos for Bass Pro Shops and Hellman's Mayonnaise.

Jeff is also a writer, actor, and stand up comedian. He worked for the Late Show with David Letterman, appearing in numerous sketches. He has traveled the country, as well as internationally, hosting and performing, while also living in New York and Los Angeles.

Additionally, Jeff works as on-air talent for FOX 5 creating humorous news segments and promos. He has performed stand up at the Comedy Store and trained at the Upright Citizen's Brigade Theatre in Los Angeles. Jeff was named 417 Magazine's Entertainer of the Year, and Springfield Business Journal's 12 People You Need to Know. Awards are nice, but kinda dumb in comparison with his wife Michelle and son Elias.

SIDEKICK AUDITION NOTICE:

We are currently looking for the NEW Mystery Hour sidekick and warm up person for Season 8 and beyond!

Auditions will take place on Wednesday, September 19th at the Gillioz Theatre. You can sign up for 1 of the time slots below. Each audition will take approximately 3-5 minutes. This audition will be 100% improvised.

The sidekick for TMH is also the warm up person. It's your job to think of funny and creative ways to get the crowd pumped up and energized, as well as make them follow directions. Do your research on the show at TheMysteryHour.com.

Call backs will be the same night between 7:30-8:30pm. All performers MUST be available for the call back.

IF YOU BOOK THE GIG: We will need you at each live taping from 5pm-11pm, 8 live events during each season. We film on either Fridays or Saturdays Sept - May.

The Mystery Hour is an Emmy Award winning televised talk show that is syndicated in: Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Minnesota, Iowa, and North Carolina. More states will be announced this year.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Must be at least 18 years old.

The job of the warm up person / television sidekick is two parts:

1. You will be the first person to engage with the audience on the night of a live taping. Your job is to go over instructions for the evening, get the crowd ready for a good show and make the audience feel welcome. We film three episodes per live event in front of a crowd of 300-700 audience members. Between each episode there is a break in which you will continue to engage the audience with give away items, etc.

2. During the televised portion of the show, you will be Host Jeff Houghton's sidekick. He will throw it to you for a short, playful exchange occasionally during episodes.

AUDITION DETAILS:

- Auditions will take place in 30 minute blocks starting at 5:30 on Wednesday September 19, 2018. We will schedule Group Alpha @ 5:30, Group Betamax @ 6:00, Group Charles @ 6:30. Call backs will start around 7:00 PM and those that make it to the second round will be scheduled to start at 7:30 PM. Please schedule a time to audition through the provided link or going to www.TheMysteryHour.com. We schedule this way in order to reduce the amount of time a person has to wait in the lobby.

- Round one expectations: You will be on stage in front of a small panel of judges. You will be given an instruction packet once you arrive describing the night's events. You will be asked to give a short performance of 2-3 minutes.

- Round two expectations: Congratulations! You made it to round two. You will be on stage in front of a small group of authentic audience members in addition to the small panel of judges. You will be asked to announce Jeff and bring him out on stage. You will have a short, playful exchange with Jeff for a moment.

COMPENSATION:

- We are a small show that is syndicated in seven states, however we do not have a large budget. We are able to compensate some--but you certainly won’t get wealthy from it. However, you may become a little bit famous :)
